When reviewing the performance of individual stocks or stock sectors, one pattern frequently appears – this years stock laggards are often next year’s winners. Below is a chart of yearly stock performance broken down by sector from 2007 to 2016.

You’ll notice no sector repeated a top place finish in two consecutive years (though bottom place finishers did repeat three times). Three times, though, the worst sector one year went on to be the best sector the following year. It is another helpful reminder that all sectors and asset classes rotate in performance over time and why diversification is so important.
